Sashiko Stitching Workshops

Sashiko Stitching Workshops

$300.00

This is a unique opportunity to learn authentic Sashiko stitching from a traditional master, Atsushi Futatsuya. You will feel the incredible passion of one of the few sashiko art successors. This will inspire and broaden your understanding of handicrafts. That's why he is eager to pass to us more than just technique in this class. Instead of saying "beginner" and "intermediate", he provides the "Core & Essence" workshop which includes the fundamentals of Sashiko. Then, the "Application & Practice" workshop will give more practical stitching once you understood sashiko as a creative relaxation.

"Core & Essence" will be a strict form of teaching as every participant is required to follow the direction of Atsushi. "Application & Practice" will be a bit more easy-going like an independent study while using the technique & understanding of Sashiko of "Core & Essence".
If you are pleased to use your hands and appreciate textiles, give it a try! (Choose one or both classes for the Sashiko stitching workshop.)

Sashiko Workshop I
"Core & Essence"

The form "Kata" explains everything we practice as Sashiko

Saturday, August 3, 2024
10:00am - 4:30pm
at Loop of the Loom - DUMBO
(map)
$300 (+ material $70 at the class)

Beginners are welcome! If you're looking for something other than SAORI that you can immerse yourself in, this will be a new way. You will learn the important techniques and mindset of Sashiko on the first day. Atsushi will give a lecture on the art and history of Sashiko, based on the wisdom of the tradition of his family and many years of experience as a Sashiko educator. Learn how to transfer patterns onto fabric and how to use long needles, and experience the joy of rhythmic running stitches called ‘Unshin’. Start practicing this meditative art and advance your skills with a lot of hands-on guidance. Each student can take their work home with the Upcycle Stitches Sashiko Kit.

You will apply the Sashiko I shared on the "Core & Essence" on to the actual project such as some ordinary clothes you wear!
Learn how to apply Sashiko to your everyday clothes. Atsushi will teach you to have fun, not focus on perfect techniques. You'll mend your family's clothes with mindful stitching and learn how to prepare fabric.
In this class, Atsushi will introduce a different style of Sashiko with the same form, ideas, and techniques we covered in our previous learnings including Hitomezashi pattern.

Prerequisite of past Sashiko "Core & Essence" workshop by Atsushi, however, this class includes some review of the Sashiko stitching.

* Prerequisite of the past Full-Time Sashiko Stitching Workshop (3 hours+) by Atsushi.
** If you are a beginner, you must first complete the Sashiko Workshop I "Core & Essence" on August 3rd, before attending the Sashiko Workshop II "Application & Practice".
*** If you take both two-day classes, you can receive a gift!

About Instructor: Atsushi "Azu" Futatsuya is a Sashiko artist and curator who is the 3rd generation of a surviving Sashiko business family in Gifu, Japan. He grew up in a traditional textile artisan family who lived with a pile of fabric, needles, thimbles, and so many colored threads. After his father passed away, Azu and his mother Keiko founded Sashi.Co & Keiko Futatsuya in 2015 to revive the Sashiko business, even though they live apart in America and Japan. Today Sashiko is getting popular because of its simplicity, beauty, and concept of visible mending. He has both sides of understanding – Sashiko as the “merely” stitching and Sashiko as the “super cool” art. His new company Upcycle Stitches promotes Sashiko artistry through offering workshops and high-quality supplies and building a community around this incredible craft tradition.
